Studio and Star System (1930-1960)

The studio system of the Hollywood before accompanies or holds everything in the film industry. Every studio has their own directors, writers, camera man, actors, actresses, cinematographers, editors, producers, production designers, even to the least of all works such as janitors, personal assistants, they all manage to have all of these that makes the film production work.

They have this contract allotted for more or less seven years depending on the deal or agreement between the studio and the employee that will work for them. They cannot transfer from one studio to another just because they wanted to; instead, they give their best and loyalty to the studio they are working for.

Studios in Hollywood before also own the movie houses wherein their produced film shall be presented. They do all the distribution and they manipulate when and where it will be shown, if it’s for intelligent people, commoners, or those who are business-minded, loves to watch movies or just entertain themselves. For example, it is for people in Texas, New York, etc.

Star System in Hollywood before as stated a while ago is contracted. They dedicate themselves in the studio they work for- it has to be with all their heart and soul. You have to be determined and be at your best. They cannot work for other studios just because they wanted to earn extra income. These talents are actually owned by the studio and in some instances, they are sent to drama school in order to learn things that will help them enhance their acting skills and be fitted to the character they are to portray. They also have to be decent in everything that they say, do and decide. According to the video we’ve watched, stars during this don’t actually smoke, get drunk or got involved on anomalies that could ruin their reputation as public figures and if there’s any, it does not create much noise because it is the studio’s reputation they carry.

However, the studios in Hollywood today are quite independent and acquire employees as long as they wanted to. In the case of Universal studios, as I’ve noticed, they still managed not to hold production outside. They have different stations like forests, cowboy theme, a city and other things. They no longer hire directors for so long but giving them chance, to choose what film they wanted to manage depending on their expertise like George Lucas, he’s with the public’s concern while Copolla considers himself.

The star system of Hollywood today is very different from the classics. They can choose the film they wanted to join. It is the directors and studios that chase for them, especially if it’s a renowned actor like Brad Pitt. In addition, they don’t care what other people might say about them, whether they are controversial or gain bad reputation or sets as bad example. It does not matter, as long as it does not affect to their career and the audience still patronize them, they will click. Whether Paris Hilton will be involved in such anomalies or not, as long as the public wants them they will continue.

Since Philippine film industry does not have large capital unlike the Hollywood film industry, they don’t manage to have large studios and own directors, produces for their own. However, they also have these contracts stated a while ago. They don’t own movie houses like the Americans. They introduce their films to these cinemas and it’s a struggle if it will be shown or not. And the productions like Sampaguita, RVQ, etc… if they fall, so are their employees. And their stars/actors were so obedient. But today, it is so hard to produce films, we are once one of the leading who watches films. But now, we just produce less than 20 films in a year. Especially in the independent films, because they have no so much connections with the movie houses owners. Filipino stars today, like in Hollywood, though not that liberated, can also choose what role they are going to portray. And can fight for their right and choose what they want.
